What is a repeater?
An
amateur (ham) radio repeater
is a device that can receive a radio frequency signal and retransmit it on either a different
frequency or with greater power or both. Repeaters allow us to communicate effectively
with ham stations at distances beyond the normal reach of our equipment. In particular,
this is a list of some
Utah
full-time ham radio repeaters, and most of these will be on the
2-meter and
70-cm
bands because of the widespread availability of the repeaters on these frequencies.

to display additional information
To properly communicate using a ham radio repeater, you must ensure that your radio has
the following features set:
Nominal frequency
Frequency offset
Offset direction
CTCSS tone
Some of these features (namely the frequency offset and offset direction) might be
automatically set by your radio, or can be automatically set by a menu setting.
Repeater frequency offset and offset direction
Each repeater below is listed with a
nominal frequency,
which is its
output
frequency, meaning that is the frequency you need to set your receiver
so you can receive its signal. The plus (+) and
minus (—) signs following each frequency
indicate the repeater offset direction (also called the
shift direction, noted by SFT-D on some transceivers.)
The repeater
input
frequency, meaning the one you need to set your
transmitter to, is the nominal frequency plus the frequency offset.
This way, when you
key
your
mic or
PTT button, the repeater
input frequency will appear on your display. The meanings
of the offset direction signs on 2 m are therefore
(+) : The repeater input frequency is the nominal frequency plus 600 kHz
(—) : The repeater input frequency is the nominal frequency minus 600 kHz
To communicate with these repeaters, you must set your transceiver accordingly, with
the proper offset. Many modern transceivers automatically accommodate the
Utah Band Plan policy,
which is that
-
2-meter repeaters at
147.000 MHz and below must be set to a minus (—) 0.6 MHz (600 kHz)
offset
-
2-meter repeaters above
147.000 MHz must be set to a plus (+) 0.6 MHz
(600 kHz) offset
-
70-cm repeaters must be set to a minus (—) 5.0 MHz offset
-
6-meter repeaters must be set to a minus (—) 1.0 MHz offset
-
1.25-meter repeaters must be set to a minus (—) 1.6 MHz offset
Repeater CTCSS tone
Many repeaters require a CTCSS
(formerly PL)
tone to re-transmit your signal, to help filter out
interference
from nearby repeaters or other
noise
sources. That is, they squelch
all incoming signals that do not include the specified tone. The tone required by each repeater is
listed below in bold type following the repeater's
nominal
frequency. To accommodate this, set your SQL.TYP to TONE or ENC or TEN
or rt for some radios; on many others, set the Transmit CTCSS to the tone frequency,
and the Receive CTCSS to 0.0 or OFF.
Although many repeaters require the specified CTCSS tone to receive your signal, some also
re-transmit signals using a CTCSS tone, allowing you to set your radio to filter out all
incoming signals except those that send the tone.
Finally, some websites list CSQ
under the CTCSS or PL categories for many repeaters, which simply means
that they do not require a CTCSS tone on this particular repeater input
(they rely solely on the carrier to
open
the repeater and squelch other signals.) You can learn more about this from
a variety of sources.
Repeater features
-
A repeater listed as Closed is one whose services are not available to the general
public, but might be available to the owner, contributors, or members of a club, and often
accessible through a particular tone or code
-
Some repeaters are listed in more than one location due to their wide coverage area
